SUMMARY:Art at Noon: A Conversation with Bo Bartlett
DESCRIPTION:Meet the artist behind some of contemporary American realism’s most striking images. Bo Bartlett\, a celebrated PAFA alum (Certificate ’80) and featured artist in A Nation of Artists\, joins the museum for a lunchtime conversation exploring his five-decade career defined by photographic precision and profound emotional depth. \nEducated at PAFA in the tradition of Thomas Eakins\, Bartlett’s monumental canvases are populated by family and friends caught in moments of everyday transcendence — exploring a mythical concept of the universal home set in Georgia and on the coast of Maine. \nAdmission is Pay-What-You-Wish. Register at pafa.org.

SUMMARY:Spring Listening Circle with Denise Dunkley and Mirian Masaquiza Jerez
DESCRIPTION:Calder Gardens launches a new Listening Circles series on Friday\, May 8 from 6:00 to 7:30 PM\, inspired by Indigenous talking circles in which participants gather to reflect\, listen deeply\, and share across generations. The inaugural session is guided by Denise Dunkley of the Nanticoke Lenni-Lenape Tribal Nation\, with special guest Mirian Masaquiza Jerez of the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues\, who shares perspectives from the forum’s 25th session focused on climate change and the health of Indigenous Peoples. \nFor many Indigenous Peoples of the Amazon rainforest\, círculos de la palabra — circles of the spoken word\, or talking circles — are essential communal gatherings where knowledge\, memory\, and care are shared. Elders\, adults\, and the youngest members of the community sit together in a non-hierarchical circle\, listening attentively while affirming listening as a collective responsibility. These practices nurture intergenerational bonds and recognize wisdom as something that emerges through presence\, reciprocity\, and time. \nThe program takes place on the Calder Gardens Disc\, the outdoor area in front of the main entrance. If weather conditions require\, the program will move indoors.

SUMMARY:Pictures in Motion: Films & Videos by Agnès Varda\, Lucy Raven\, Rosa Barba\, and Ephraim Asili
DESCRIPTION:From May 7 through May 31\, Calder Gardens screens four films and videos commissioned by the Calder Foundation in 2017 and originally curated by Vic Brooks. The series extends Alexander Calder’s longstanding dialogue with moving image — evident in his collaborations with filmmakers including Herbert Matter and Hans Richter — into contemporary practice\, with each film produced in direct response to Calder’s inquiry into form\, movement\, and time. \nThe films include When Sandy Dreams (Agnès Varda)\, Shape Notes (Lucy Raven)\, Enigmatic Whisper (Rosa Barba)\, and Calder for Peter (Ephraim Asili). Each articulates a shared interest in duration and transformation\, activating the moving image field as a site of relation and perceptual encounter. \nPictures in Motion screens all day during Calder Gardens open hours. Free with admission.
