The Eastern State April 2026 programming calendar is one of the most substantive the historic site has assembled in recent memory. Running across the full month, the lineup weaves together film screenings, live panel discussions, self-guided tours, hands-on art activities, and youth programming — all anchored by Eastern State Penitentiary’s ongoing Justice 101 series and the broader A Time for Liberty initiative. If you have been looking for a reason to visit Eastern State beyond its celebrated Halloween programming, April 2026 is that reason.

Eastern State April Justice 101 Series

The Justice 101 programming is the centerpiece of the Eastern State April calendar, bringing together scholars, filmmakers, and policy experts for two free evening events that connect historical narratives to urgent contemporary issues. The first, on Thursday, April 16, is a screening of the documentary Free Joan Little followed by a conversation with director Yoruba Richen, moderated by David Olson of Retro Report.

The program traces the intertwined legacies of Rosa Parks and Joan Little in advancing civil rights, women’s rights, and prison reform — and explores how their stories can be used to educate young people today. A reception runs from 5:30 to 6:00 p.m., with the screening and discussion from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. Admission is free with a reservation.

The second Justice 101 event, on Thursday, April 23, takes on prison gerrymandering — the practice of counting incarcerated individuals in the districts where they are imprisoned rather than in their home communities, distorting the democratic process in ways most people are not aware of. The panel features Rory Kramer and Briana Remster, both Associate Professors at Villanova University, alongside Carol Kuniholm of Fair Districts PA and Andrew McGinley of the Committee of Seventy. Eastern State Penitentiary President and CEO Dr. Kerry Sautner moderates. The event runs in person at Eastern State and simultaneously via Zoom and YouTube. Admission is free with a reservation.

Eastern State April Spring Break, and the Jewish History Tour

Eastern State Penitentiary’s Spring Break: The Great Escape runs through Sunday, April 5, offering immersive programming centered on stories of resistance and creativity within the penitentiary’s walls. Included with admission, the programming features hands-on activities, storytelling, music, poetry, and participatory experiences exploring how incarcerated individuals have used creativity, art, faith, and humor as forms of expression and resistance within a system designed to contain them. It is part of the larger A Time for Liberty initiative and reflects Eastern State’s ongoing commitment to programming that takes its subject seriously rather than simply presenting the site as spectacle.

From Wednesday, April 1, through Wednesday, April 8, in honor of Passover, Eastern State Penitentiary presents a Jewish History Self-Guided Tour exploring the often-overlooked stories of Jewish prisoners and communities connected to the penitentiary. The tour takes visitors through key locations within the grounds — including the first synagogue established in an American prison — while highlighting personal narratives, cultural traditions, and the broader historical context of Jewish life in Philadelphia during the prison’s operational years. Included with admission.

Eastern State April Drop-In Art Activity and Scout Day

On Saturday, April 4, from noon to 2:00 p.m., Philadelphia-based artist Mark Loughney leads a drop-in art activity open to all ages and included with admission. Loughney’s work — including his ongoing exhibition Pyrrhic Defeat: A Visual Study of Mass Incarceration — uses insect imagery as a lens for themes of transformation, growth, and resilience. Visitors can drop in at any time, all materials are provided, and no prior experience is necessary. Loughney will offer demonstrations and guidance throughout the session.

On Sunday, April 19, Eastern State Penitentiary hosts In-Person Scout Day: Architecture, running from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Designed for members of Scouting America, Girl Scouts of the USA, and other youth audiences, the program explores the history and design of the world’s first penitentiary — examining architectural influence, the ethics of prison design, and career paths in architecture and historic preservation. Scouts can also meet badge requirements. Timed entry tickets are required and can be purchased in advance.
