Eastern State Fall and Winter 2026 programming continues Philadelphia’s Semiquincentennial commemoration well past the summer crowds, with special events, discussions, and new art running through December. Much of the fall and winter 2026 calendar falls under Eastern State’s yearlong initiative, A Time for Liberty: Our Shared History, Our Shared Future, supported by the City of Philadelphia, America250PA, and the National Endowment for the Humanities, among other civic and cultural partners.

Dr. Kerry Sautner, President and CEO of Eastern State, framed the extended commemoration as a chance to examine the country’s history rather than simply celebrate it. “Eastern State is creating opportunities for people to come together, ask meaningful questions, and explore how the ideals of liberty and justice have evolved,” Sautner said.

Eastern State Fall and Winter 2026: September Highlights

September opens with two Justice 101 panels worth planning around. On September 8, Justice 101: Redefining Rehabilitation looks at Norway’s “normality principle” and how it’s being studied through the Scandinavian Prison Project at SCI-Chester, featuring officials from the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections, the Philadelphia Department of Prisons, and the Norwegian Red Cross.

A week later, Justice 101: Voices Beyond the Walls partners with the Philadelphia City Commissioners’ Office for a National Voter Registration Day panel on civic engagement for justice-involved individuals.

Constitution Day brings Democracy For All Week, September 17 through 21, with interactive tours and family programming centered on prison newspapers and freedom of expression. The month closes September 23 with a conversation on ReVision: Art and Justice, Eastern State’s new three-year artist residency and exhibition series.

Eastern State Fall and Winter 2026: October Highlights

Halloween Nights returns for its 35th season starting October 2, running select nights through November 7 with five haunted houses and historic tours across the 10-acre site. Eastern State says further details will follow in a separate release closer to the season.

On October 3, Firstival: 52 Weeks of Firsts brings a full day of live music and poetry readings from 2026-2027 Philadelphia Poet Laureate Raina J. León, alongside local artisans and community organizations from Fairmount and beyond.

October 13 marks the opening of Freedom Through Faith: Judaism at Eastern State and Beyond, the historic site’s newest permanent exhibit, paired with a Justice 101 conversation on religious freedom within the justice system. The month wraps with the Fall Festival on October 25, a trick-or-treat and scavenger hunt built for kids and caregivers, free for anyone in costume.

Eastern State Fall and Winter 2026: November and December

November’s centerpiece is the November 20 opening of ReVision: Art and Justice itself, the inaugural installation from artist-in-residence Cody Stuhltrager, supported by The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage. The month also includes Veterans’ Day Weekend programming on military service and the justice system, plus Scout Days running into year’s end for badge-eligible learning experiences.

December opens with RockyFest on December 3, tying Eastern State to the citywide celebration of Philadelphia’s most famous film franchise with a mini tour on Charles “Jack” Blackburn, a boxing champion once incarcerated at the site. The Justice 101 series closes out the year December 9 with a look at prisoners’ rights from Attica to today, and Shared Light: Winter Celebrations runs December 20 through 31, exploring how incarcerated people historically marked the winter holidays.

Together, the season builds directly on Eastern State’s fall programming from last year, extending the site’s Semiquincentennial commitment well past a single anniversary month and into a genuine season-long conversation about what liberty has meant, and still means, in Philadelphia.

Registration for the Justice 101 series and other advance-registration programs is available through Eastern State’s website, with most fall and winter offerings included in standard site admission. The season gives Philadelphians a genuine reason to return to Eastern State more than once between now and the new year.
