This fall, the Eastern State Fall Programs return with a compelling and diverse schedule of public events, designed to deepen civic engagement, encourage dialogue around incarceration, and celebrate Philadelphia’s rich cultural identity. From interactive fireside chats to hauntingly immersive Halloween experiences, the historic penitentiary becomes more than a landmark—it becomes a space of living memory, reflection, and transformation.
Beginning September 17, Eastern State Penitentiary kicks off Democracy for All Week, a series of thought-provoking experiences surrounding freedom of expression and the First Amendment. This programming encourages visitors to examine how civil liberties apply— and often fail to apply—within prison walls. Expect a week filled with writing workshops, live art-making, and guided discussions on how law, journalism, and creativity intersect with human rights. The Eastern State Fall Programs aren’t just about history—they’re about action.

And that momentum continues with Justice 101: Freedom Behind Bars, an online session launching the 2025–2026 season of Eastern State’s acclaimed Center for Justice Education series. Held on September 17 from 12:00 to 1:00 PM, this inaugural session will focus on the First Amendment’s role in shaping the lives and limitations of incarcerated individuals in America. Free with registration, this session invites Philadelphians and beyond to engage from wherever they are.
Eastern State Fall Programs Spotlight Art, Identity, and Reflection
Among the standout moments in this season’s Eastern State Fall Programs is the Special Public Tour and Artist Program on Friday, September 19. This powerful event pairs a guided tour of the cellblocks with an intimate conversation featuring artist Mark Loughney. Known for his portrait drawings of incarcerated individuals, Loughney will not only discuss his work but draw live in the very spaces where history lingers thick in the air. The intersection of art, memory, and justice comes alive in a way only Eastern State can deliver.
September 21 welcomes students citywide for CollegeFest 2025, offering free admission from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM. In partnership with local institutions, this event encourages students to connect with the city’s cultural heart while exploring themes that shape the world they’re inheriting.
Another deeply meaningful addition is the Jewish History Self-Guided Walking Tour, available from September 22 through October 13. Visitors will discover the remarkable and often overlooked stories of Jewish life behind bars, including the site of the first synagogue within an American prison. Through personal narratives and historic touchpoints, this self-guided experience adds vital context to Philadelphia’s broader Jewish history.

Eastern State Fall Programs Embrace the Haunting and the Historic
No roundup of the Eastern State Fall Programs would be complete without Halloween Nights, returning from September 19 through November 8. For those craving a more visceral experience, this nationally celebrated festival transforms the gothic penitentiary into a ten-acre immersive spectacle featuring five haunted houses, live performances, historic night tours, themed bars, and more. Whether you’re in it for the fright or the thrill of walking history’s halls under moonlight, Halloween Nights continues to be one of the most anticipated fall events in Philadelphia.

More than just a spooky spectacle, Halloween Nights also reminds us of Eastern State’s layered past—a place where terror was once real and justice was often abstract. That duality—the tension between celebration and contemplation—is exactly what makes the fall season at Eastern State so uniquely Philadelphian.
