This summer, Gravers Lane Gallery in Philadelphia becomes a beacon of kinetic creativity with the unveiling of the In Motion Invitational Jewelry Exhibition. On view from July 17 through August 28, 2025, this thoughtfully curated show challenges perceptions of jewelry as static ornamentation. Instead, it reveals a dazzling new world where wearable art dances, shifts, and responds to its environment and wearer.

Curated by accomplished artists and co-founders of Night Shift Studio, Ellyse Bendillo and Kate Dannenberg, the In Motion Invitational Jewelry Exhibition brings together an exceptional array of contemporary kinetic jewelry and small sculpture. This is the second time the curatorial duo has collaborated with Gravers Lane Gallery, and their return signals the gallery’s continued commitment to pushing the boundaries of craft.

The exhibition opens with a First Friday Reception on August 1st, 2025, from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Guests are invited to a special artist talk at 6:30 PM, where Bendillo and Dannenberg will share insights into the concept of motion in jewelry design and engage in conversation with participating artists and gallery staff.

In Motion Invitational Jewelry Exhibition: Adornment Engaged

Kinetic jewelry represents a powerful intersection of engineering, artistry, and emotional resonance. The In Motion Invitational showcases this in full force. From meticulously balanced mobiles to tactile spinning rings and reactive wearable sculptures, these works engage the eyes, as well as the senses of sound and touch.

With artists like Kristine Bolhuis, Liz Clark, Teresa Faris, Heather Guidero, Mia Kaplan, Hannah Keefe, Emily Rogstad, Misaki Sano, John Sullivan, Yuri Tozuka, and Jeremy Waak contributing to the show, the breadth and technical brilliance on display are staggering. Each piece reflects a comprehensive knowledge of materials, from crisp mechanical movements in metal to thread-like fluidity in chain links.

The Vision Behind the In Motion Invitational Jewelry Exhibition

Ellyse Bendillo and Kate Dannenberg, the minds behind Night Shift Studio, bring a rich blend of artistic insight and technical expertise to the exhibition. Bendillo, an accomplished enamelist and jewelry educator, draws on her deep experience in Philadelphia’s Historic Jeweler’s Row to curate pieces that fuse traditional craftsmanship with modern storytelling. Dannenberg, a lifelong maker inspired by nature’s forms and textures, approaches curation with the same care and enthusiasm that defines her jewelry practice.

Together, their collaborative curatorial lens captures the essence of contemporary adornment as something both functional and poetic. Night Shift Studio, their South Philadelphia base, fosters community and creative exchange—values that are reflected in the spirit of the exhibition.

In a time where art is increasingly digital and disembodied, the In Motion Invitational Jewelry Exhibition offers a necessary return to the tactile. These works celebrate slowness, engagement, and the beauty of objects that demand attention and participation. Through movement, they remind us that jewelry is not just decorative—it is a conversation between maker and wearer, past and present, stillness and motion.
