MLK Day of Service in Fairmount Park this January
Winter in Philly makes you appreciate our public spaces even more. The trees are bare, the daylight is short, and you notice what’s working—and what needs attention—because there’s nowhere for it to hide. That’s why the MLK Day of Service with Fairmount Park Conservancy lands so powerfully this year. It’s an invitation to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy with action, not just admiration, and to do it in the places that keep our city feeling open, breathable, and shared.
Fairmount Park Conservancy’s mission is bigger than a single volunteer day, and it’s worth understanding the scope: they “bring parks to life” by working with the City of Philadelphia and communities to steward parks, nurture the shared environment and cultural resources, and support public health across 10,200 acres that include Fairmount Park, six other watershed parks, and more than 130 neighborhood parks and gardens citywide. When you show up for the MLK Day of Service, you’re plugging into a year-round effort that keeps Philadelphia’s green infrastructure—literal and social—healthy and welcoming.

MLK Day of Service: Two Volunteer Workdays, One Shared Purpose
This MLK Day of Service takes place on Monday, January 19, 2026, and it’s designed to be genuinely accessible. Volunteers of all ages and abilities are welcome, and Fairmount Park Conservancy makes it easy to jump in: all tools, gloves, and instruction are provided, and no prior experience is necessary. The only real requirements are the practical ones—dress for the weather and wear closed-toe shoes—because this is hands-on stewardship work, the kind that leaves you tired in the best way.
The day is split across two locations, so you can choose what fits your neighborhood—or simply the park that means the most to you. In FDR Park in South Philly, the MLK Day of Service runs from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Meadow Lake, located at 1500 Pattison Avenue and South Broad Street. This volunteer workday focuses on the kind of winter maintenance that sets the stage for spring: removing invasive plant species, cutting vines, picking up litter and trash, and taking on general stewardship tasks that support this historic Olmsted-designed landscape.
At the same time, West Philly has its own opportunity to step up. The MLK Day of Service workday in West Fairmount Park also runs from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., centered at Parkside Evans Playground, 5300 Parkside Avenue. The projects here are equally tangible and equally important—invasive species removal, trash and litter clean-up, and general beautification in and around Parkside Evans Playground and nearby park areas. It’s the kind of work that immediately changes how a place feels, especially for families and neighbors who use the playground and surrounding paths year-round.
Both workdays are free, but registration is required, and that structure makes sense—organizing tools, projects, and crews is how a volunteer day becomes a real impact day.
MLK Day of Service: How to Join, What to Expect
If you’ve never done a volunteer workday in the parks, this is the perfect entry point because it’s designed to welcome you in. You show up, you get oriented, you’re handed what you need, and you work alongside people who care about the same city you do. The MLK Day of Service is also a reminder that parks don’t take the winter off. Even in January, Philadelphia’s parks need attention to stay safe, inviting, and ready for the rush of activity that hits when the weather breaks.
