Mosaic Society of Philadelphia Showcases Artistic Freedom in City Hall

The Mosaic Society of Philadelphia is once again transforming the walls of City Hall with intricate, expressive, and thought-provoking works in its 13th Annual Members Exhibit, titled FREE. Opening with a reception on Friday, November 7th, 2025, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM, this year’s show invites both mosaic enthusiasts and curious art lovers to experience a rich, tactile interpretation of what it means to be “free”—artistically, historically, and personally.

Presented in collaboration with Creative Philadelphia and Craft Now, the Mosaic Society of Philadelphia is offering a collective narrative that blends traditional mosaic techniques with modern-day storytelling. Whether channeling Philadelphia’s revolutionary legacy or meditating on themes of personal liberation, the artists take full creative license to explore freedom in all its manifestations. The result is a striking visual dialogue that both honors the city’s historical identity and expands the possibilities of what mosaic can mean in contemporary art.

Mosaic Society of Philadelphia Artists Embrace the Theme of “FREE”

Located just outside the Mayor’s Office in Conversation Hall, Room 201 on the second floor of City Hall, the Mosaic Society of Philadelphia’s exhibit FREE is accessible to all—and rightfully so. The theme demands it. From textured interpretations of civil rights movements to meditations on emotional and creative release, each piece on display tells a personal yet universally resonant story.

The exhibit showcases the incredible diversity of MSOP’s member artists, who have interpreted the theme using materials that range from reclaimed ceramics to mirrored glass, stone, and found objects. With its open-ended prompt, FREE encourages artists to reflect on the historical significance of Philadelphia as the birthplace of American independence, while also making room for deeply intimate expressions of identity and autonomy.

As part of the city’s continued efforts to spotlight local artists in civic spaces, this exhibit reaffirms the Mosaic Society of Philadelphia’s role in enriching public art culture while engaging the community through accessible, imaginative design.
