Night of Lights Streetscape Exhibition Shines a Spotlight on Chestnut Hill’s Past
The Night of Lights Streetscape Exhibition this fall illuminates the historic heart of Chestnut Hill from Friday, October 3 to Monday, October 6, 2026. Now in its eighth year, the immersive outdoor celebration returns to transform Germantown Avenue into a walkable open-air gallery of light, memory, and architectural reverence.
Presented by the Chestnut Hill Conservancy, this glowing four-evening exhibition stretches from the 8000 to 8700 blocks of Germantown Avenue, featuring large-scale archival projections that breathe life into the buildings themselves. Think of it as a curated stroll through time—where history, community, and creativity meet at the intersection of preservation and art.
The festivities begin with a Flip the Switch ceremony on Friday, October 3, at 6:30 PM, at 8708 Germantown Avenue, followed by musical performances from local talents including Limited Time Only (LTO), Flute of the Spirit, and artists from Maplewood Music Studio and Yes! And… Collaborative Arts. From 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM each evening, visitors will experience the full streetscape exhibition in all its glowing, story-rich glory.
Night of Lights Streetscape Exhibition Unveils Six Immersive Windows
This year’s Night of Lights Streetscape Exhibition features six unique illuminated window displays—each a curated presentation of historical slideshows paired with educational content. These projections not only decorate the storefronts of Germantown Avenue but elevate them to canvases of collective memory.
The six featured themes for 2026 include Celebrating Teaching Artists, which spotlights the creative force behind Allens Lane Art Center’s community programming. Mapping the Wissahickon, chronicling 300 years of the watershed’s transformation through rare maps and publications. Friends of the Cresheim Trail, tracing the corridor from its railroading roots to its present-day recreational use. From Founding to Future, reflecting on the Conservancy’s decades-long leadership in preservation and stewardship. Stories Along the Avenue is an artistic mosaic of cultural groups from Germantown, Mt. Airy, and Chestnut Hill. And finally, the West Mt. Airy Neighbors Historic Preservation Initiative, highlighting grassroots efforts to conserve neighborhood heritage.
Each projection is a carefully composed narrative—combining images, maps, documents, and insights that underscore Northwest Philadelphia’s architectural, cultural, and environmental legacy. It’s a spectacle grounded in scholarship and civic pride, and it’s completely free to attend.
Night of Lights Streetscape Exhibition Fosters History, Community, and Conservation
What began as a one-time event in 2017 to mark the Chestnut Hill Conservancy’s 50th anniversary has grown into one of the region’s most anticipated fall festivals. As Conservancy Executive Director David Gest shares, “Night of Lights brings community history and architecture to light through large-scale projections in storefront windows and vibrant illumination along Germantown Avenue.”
The event celebrates not just buildings and artifacts but the people and organizations who make preservation possible. Through strategic partnerships with sponsors like Chubb, Kriger + Associates Architects, Laurel Hill Gardens, Robertson’s Flowers & Events, and community groups like DesignPhiladelphia and Archives Month Philly, the Conservancy has built a deeply rooted tradition that feels both timeless and timely.
