Brauhaus Schmitz Maifest 2024

Celebrating Spring German style, the Brauhaus Schmitz Maifest is filled with German culture, food, beer, and fun!

On Saturday, May 4, 2024, the Brauhaus Schmitz Maifest event transforms the 700 block of South Street into a lively street fair from 11:00 am to 8:00 pm. Brauhaus Schmitz hosts this spectacular spring festival, promising a day filled with authentic cultural experiences, live music, delectable German fare, and various beers.

Maifest, or May Day, is a traditional German celebration that marks the arrival of spring with a Maypole, Philadelphia’s largest, around which the festivities revolve.

The day kicks off with the opening of the festival at 11:00 am. By 1:00 pm, the atmosphere peaks with the Liter Lift Competition, where participants test their strength and endurance by holding a liter of beer for as long as possible. The winner earns local glory and a chance to compete in the national championship in New York City. Following the competition, a ceremonial keg tapping occurs at 1:25 pm, officially starting the festivities with a traditional toast led by the Brauhaus family and key staff.

You can enjoy performances by Die Heimatklange Band throughout the day, which delivers a mix of traditional German oompah tunes and modern party hits. Complementing the musical offerings are performances by the United German Hungarian Dance group, who enchant onlookers with traditional folk dances around the towering Maypole.

For those seeking a stronger spirit, the festival offers an assortment of Schnapsski shots.

Family-friendly activities include games, face painting, flower crown making, and dancing, ensuring that Maifest offers something for every age group. As evening falls, the event culminates with a last call at 7:00 pm, ending at 8:00 pm after a day filled with joy, culture, and community celebration.
