Fairmount gets a morning menu on Sunday. Buena Onda breakfast launches November 1 at 1901 Callowhill Street, served daily from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m., with six tacos, burritos and bowl options built around scrambled and fried eggs. It is a 60-day run through the end of the year, and the neighborhood decides whether it stays.
Chef Jose Garces, a James Beard Award winner and Iron Chef, owns the Baja-inspired taqueria, which opened in 2015 with tacos, burritos, bowls and margaritas. He says the breakfast menu brings the same bold flavors into the morning, built for people with a few minutes to spare. Garces puts the ask plainly: “come hungry and help us save breakfast.”
What Buena Onda Breakfast Serves
The Buena Onda breakfast menu keeps to the taqueria’s Baja spirit, with flour tortillas, queso Oaxaca, avocado and salsa Mexicana turning up in nearly every order. Three items are tacos or tacodillas, two are burritos and one is a bowl, so a morning visit can be a quick hand-held bite or a plated breakfast with a fork.
The Bacon Jalapeño Breakfast Taco puts scrambled eggs, smoked bacon, jalapeños, queso Oaxaca and scallions in a flour tortilla. The Chorizo Breakfast Taco swaps in Mexican chorizo with salsa Mexicana, avocado and crema. The Egg & Cheese Tacodilla is the simple one, scrambled eggs and queso in a flour tortilla.

Two burritos use extra-large toasted tortillas. The Oaxaca Breakfast Burrito holds scrambled eggs, breakfast potatoes, avocado, queso Oaxaca and salsa Mexicana, and the California Breakfast Burrito drops the salsa and keeps the eggs, potatoes, queso Oaxaca and avocado. Both are made for busy mornings.
The Breakfast Bowl starts with freshly fried breakfast potatoes and adds two fried eggs, black beans, queso fresco, peppers and onions, avocado and salsa Mexicana. It is the one order that comes with black beans, and the potatoes under the eggs give it the weight of a full breakfast.
Coffee comes from Rival Bros, the local roaster that also shows up in the National Coffee Day roundup, as drip or cold brew, with house-made sweeteners on the side. The restaurant announced the November 1 start on its own Instagram account alongside the menu.
How the Buena Onda Breakfast Trial Works
Buena Onda breakfast is a limited-time service, a 60-day program that ends with the year. The restaurant is responding to changing habits and to what it sees as an opening in Fairmount for good, quick breakfast. If enough neighbors show up, the program could extend, and guests have the final say.
The run covers November and December, so it spans the start of the holiday season. Buena Onda has served lunch, dinner and margaritas since 2015, and Garces has used the Callowhill kitchen for seasonal specials before, including the Jose Garces Maine Lobster Taco. Breakfast is a longer test of the same kitchen.
Buena Onda Breakfast Hours and the Opening-Week Coffee
Breakfast runs from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. every day. Regular service follows from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., seven days a week, and happy hour continues daily from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. The Buena Onda breakfast menu is aimed at neighborhood residents, commuters and anyone who wants a quick start to the day without settling for something forgettable.
For the first week of the launch, anyone who buys a breakfast item gets a free small Rival Bros drip coffee. More details and specials are posted on the restaurant’s Instagram account.
Buena Onda has built its name on good vibes since 2015, and a morning menu puts them to work before lunch. If Fairmount shows up for breakfast, the neighborhood gets to keep it.
