Danny Rumph Classic 20th Anniversary Celebrates Legacy and Community
Philadelphia’s premier summer basketball tournament returns in full force for its milestone 20th year with the Danny Rumph Classic 20th Anniversary, taking place Thursday, August 7, through Monday, August 11, 2025, at Drexel University’s Daskalakis Athletic Center. More than just a game, this powerful five-day event is a heartfelt celebration of life, sport, and purpose, honoring the legacy of Danny Rumph—a talented Philly baller whose untimely death in 2005 from sudden cardiac arrest sparked a movement to save lives.
Founded in 2006 by Danny’s mother, Viola “Candy” Owens, uncle Marcus Owens, Sharif Hanford, Mike Morak, and a close-knit group of friends, the Danny Rumph Classic 20th Anniversary is organized by the Daniel E. Rumph II Foundation. The foundation champions awareness for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM)—the leading cause of Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) among young athletes—and funds critical heart screenings and AED installations throughout underserved Philadelphia communities. In 2025, the Classic not only marks two decades of hoops but also twenty years of community-driven impact and lifesaving advocacy.
Throughout its history, the tournament has drawn elite basketball talent, including the likes of James Harden, Tyrese Maxey, Jayson Tatum, the Morris Twins, and Jalen Brunson, turning gym bleachers into the front row of NBA-level showdowns. This year, with Nike stepping in as presenting sponsor, the scope has expanded to include a full-spectrum celebration of basketball culture—complete with a kids’ clinic, middle and high school showcases, and the addition of a Women’s Pro Division.
Danny Rumph Classic 20th Anniversary Game Schedule and Highlights
The Danny Rumph Classic 20th Anniversary tips off Thursday, August 7, with a full evening of high-octane men’s games starting at 6:00 PM and running every hour until 9:00 PM. The same schedule repeats on Friday, August 8, promising back-to-back hardwood action featuring top-tier talent.
Saturday, August 9, begins with a doubleheader at 1:00 PM and 2:00 PM, followed by two standout Women’s Pro Games at 3:00 PM and 4:00 PM, continuing the event’s commitment to inclusivity and recognition of elite women athletes.
Sunday, August 10, brings heart to the hardwood with the Next Bright Star Kids Clinic at 11:00 AM and the beloved Rumph Alumni Game at noon. At 2:00 PM, both the Women’s Pro Championship and the first men’s semi-final game tip off, with the second semi-final following at 3:00 PM. Monday, August 11, closes out the celebration with an outdoor festival and showcase scrimmages at 7:00 PM, culminating in the highly anticipated Championship Game at 7:30 PM.
