The Eastern State October 2026 Programs ask a lot of one site. America’s first penitentiary is in its 35th season of Halloween Nights, which is the loud part. The rest is a weekend of tour content on how the criminal justice system has affected Indigenous people, a panel on religious freedom in prison, and a free afternoon for kids in costume. Most of it is still ahead.
Firstival got the month going on Saturday, October 3, with free admission, live music from Orchestra 2001, and poetry from Philadelphia Poet Laureate Raina J. León and percussionist Karen Smith. Artist-in-residence Cody Stuhltrager ran a make-and-take art table, and local businesses and community groups filled out the day as part of Eastern State’s yearlong celebration of national firsts.
Eastern State October 2026 Programs: Halloween Nights Through November 7
Halloween Nights runs select nights through November 7. Five haunted houses anchor it: The Crypt, Nightmares, Machine Shop, Dark Tides and Big Top Terror. Historic tours, themed bars and live performances fill in around them, all inside the walls of the old prison. Separate admission applies, and the festival’s Halloween Nights page handles tickets.
The closing weekend, November 6 and 7, brings back Halloween Nights REMIXED: Holiday Havoc, with other holidays getting a horror twist. Proceeds from the festival go toward preserving the penitentiary and toward Eastern State’s public programming on the criminal justice system and its effect on the people it touches.

Eastern State October 2026 Programs: Indigenous Peoples’ Weekend and Justice 101
From Friday, October 9 through Monday, October 12, the Guide-Led Tour and Discussion adds content on how the criminal justice system has affected Indigenous people across the United States. The weekend honors Indigenous Peoples’ Day, and the extra programming is included with admission, so there is no separate ticket to buy.
The next evening, Tuesday, October 13, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., Justice 101: Religious Freedom and the Justice System looks at how people practice their faith inside the justice system, past and present. The conversation covers the legal and bureaucratic hurdles believers face and how people have gotten past them. It is tied to Freedom Through Faith: Judaism at Eastern State and Beyond, the site’s newest permanent exhibit.
Two academics carry the discussion: Michael Moreland, a professor of law and religion at Villanova University, and Marci A. Hamilton, a professor of practice in political science at the University of Pennsylvania. The program is free, held in person at the historic site and streamed on Zoom and YouTube. It belongs to The Aaron Reichlin Restorative Justice and Faith Conversations, funded by a grant from the Reichlin and Tuck Families.

Eastern State October 2026 Programs: The Free Fall Festival on October 25
The Fall Festival on Sunday, October 25, from 3 to 5 p.m., is the afternoon built for kids. Children trick-or-treat through the historic site and work through a scavenger hunt. Story time, hands-on activities, art making and music fill the rest, with Philly Elmo and the Positive Movement Drumline on the lineup.
Admission is free for kids in costume and their caregivers, and no registration is necessary. A community activity fair runs alongside it at the historic site on Fairmount Avenue in Philadelphia.
Eastern State October 2026 Programs and the Haunt That Funds Them
Dr. Kerry Sautner, Eastern State’s president and CEO, describes the site as a place with “always more to discover.” The October calendar bears that out, since the events still ahead draw very different crowds: haunt-goers, families in costume, and people who show up to hear two professors talk about faith and the law.
Put the Eastern State October 2026 Programs side by side and you get a haunted house and a panel on religious freedom under the same walls. Halloween Nights helps pay for preservation, and the other programs ask what a prison does to the people inside it. That is a heavier question than any haunted house raises, and the site is willing to ask it in the same month it sells tickets to be frightened.
