Gianna Commito – The Power of Patterns
Patterns shape our daily lives, from the clothing we wear to the signs that guide us through bustling city streets. In the thoughtful works of Gianna Commito, stripes and geometric forms become more than aesthetic elements—they transform into fundamental structures supporting complex compositions. Drawing inspiration from architecture and urban landscapes, Commito’s creations thoughtfully probe the subtle tensions between public and private realms, emphasizing the dynamic shifts, evolutions, and inevitable deterioration of built environments.
Her paintings and works on paper leverage a stunning interplay between intersecting fields of vibrant color and layered gestures that heighten visual interest and create an energetic dialogue within each composition.
Gianna Commito’s work illuminates an appreciation for materials and their historical significance. Using casein, Commito cultivates a sincere tactile connection to her artwork. Applied thoughtfully to paper or wood panels primed with marble dust and hide glue, casein’s quick-drying, unpredictable nature results in spontaneity and immediacy. Defined edges and an arresting color palette give each piece a remarkable visual intensity, far exceeding what digital reproductions could capture.

“Working Pattern” notably features some of Gianna Commito’s smaller compositions that offer concentrated moments of contemplation, encouraging close inspection and deeper engagement. As Commito’s careful juxtaposition of line, color, and form unfolds, you are drawn into a personal interaction that challenges perceptions and rewards cautious observation.
The exhibition is on display at Pentimenti Gallery from May 23 through July 19, 2025. Makes plans to attend the opening reception and conversation with the artist on May 23, beginning at 6 pm.
