In early 2024, curator Ginger Rudolph brought together a selection of Philadelphia’s Black artists for the Maker Series exhibition at Hyatt Centric Center City Philadelphia — the hotel’s first Black History Month Showcase. The Maker Series exhibition ran through February and featured work spanning textiles, paintings, photography, illustrations, and sculpture from five Philadelphia-based Black artists.

Ginger Rudolph and the Maker Series

Ginger Rudolph is a curator, writer, and public art consultant with an extensive record of public art projects across Philadelphia. She serves on the board of The Rail Park and founded HAHA Magazine and HAHAxParadigm. Her work centers on art education and community engagement, and the Maker Series Black History Month exhibition reflected both.

The multi-media exhibition at Hyatt Centric Center City Philadelphia displayed a range of artistic mediums, including textiles, paintings, photography, illustrations, and sculpture. Artists Caff Adeus, Jillian Rock, Devon Harrison, Steven CW Taylor, and Kendra Dandy represented the city’s Black artistic community across five distinct practices.

The Artists: Five Philadelphia Perspectives

Caff Adeus, known for his autobiographical paintings, blends cultural references and iconography in his work. Jillian Rock’s multidisciplinary art focuses on the narratives of Blackness and memory. Devon Harrison works across animation, glass, and chocolate sculpture. Steven CW Taylor, an award-winning visual artist and photographer, captures his cultural experiences in transformative work. Kendra Dandy, an illustrator, brings a distinctive graphic voice to the collection.

On February 7, Hyatt Centric hosted a “Hear the Makers” discussion panel, emceed by Rudolph, offering an inside look at the artists’ creative processes and the exhibition’s larger themes.

The Maker Series at Hyatt Centric has become a consistent platform for Philadelphia’s working artists. Ginger Rudolph’s curatorial work and the five artists she brought together made the Black History Month edition worth documenting.
