Honoring a Legacy: Philabundance 40th Anniversary

In May 2025, Philabundance—Philadelphia’s leading hunger relief organization—marks a remarkable milestone: its 40th Anniversary. For four decades, the organization has served as a pillar of food equity in the region, evolving from a grassroots food recovery mission into a transformative force distributing over 50 million pounds of food annually.

From its humble beginnings in 1984, when founder Pamela Rainey Lawler launched the city’s first food rescue initiative, to the organization’s role today as a key member of Feeding America, Philabundance remains committed to Ending Hunger for Good. Its impact spans from emergency food distribution to long-term solutions like workforce development and advocacy through programs such as the Philabundance Community Kitchen (PCK).

To celebrate this legacy of impact and service, Philabundance is hosting the (Beet) Hunger Bash: Presented by Free People, an all-out culinary celebration and fundraiser on Tuesday, May 14, 2025, at The Pump House in Bala Cynwyd. This festive evening promises to unite Philadelphia’s culinary elite and community champions in support of a hunger-free future.

The (Beet) Hunger Bash offers more than just a tasting event—it’s a heartfelt tribute to food, community, and the fight against hunger. Guests will enjoy curated tasting stations from over 20 top-tier restaurants and chefs, including powerhouse talents like James Beard Award winner Cristina Martinez (South Philly Barbacoa), Jeff Michaud (Osteria), and Nicholas Elmi (Lark, Laurel, and The Pump House), a James Beard Finalist and Top Chef winner. The experience pairs Philadelphia’s vibrant food scene with a mission-driven purpose, blending bold flavors and bold action.

Live entertainment will fuel the festive atmosphere, while a Maker’s Mark tasting bar and bespoke beverage offerings ensure there’s something to savor in every corner of The Pump House. The event will also feature raffle opportunities, community storytelling, and immersive moments that spotlight the real-life impact of Philabundance’s work across neighborhoods.

Every ticket purchased contributes to Philabundance’s mission of serving over 600,000 food-insecure individuals in the Greater Philadelphia area—1 in 3 of whom are children.

From feeding families to empowering individuals with culinary training and job placement through PCK, Philabundance proves that fighting hunger isn’t just about providing food—it’s about nourishing futures.
