Read by 4th, in collaboration with the Free Library of Philadelphia and Philadelphia Parks & Recreation, brings vibrant alphabet signage to North Philadelphia playgrounds, promoting early literacy and engaging learning experiences with Philly ABCs.

The Philly ABCs campaign, an exciting early literacy initiative, is now live in North Philadelphia playgrounds. Read by 4th, in partnership with the Free Library of Philadelphia and Philadelphia Parks & Recreation, has adorned fourteen public spaces with captivating alphabet signage to ignite learning curiosity in young minds.

The Philly ABCs campaign aims to promote early literacy and tackle summer learning loss among young children. Research has shown that children who enter Kindergarten with a solid grasp of letter names, shapes, and sounds are more likely to become proficient readers later in life. To ensure children are better equipped for success, the Philly ABCs bring an innovative approach to familiarize kids with the alphabet.

Working closely with Philadelphia Parks & Recreation, the captivating alphabet-themed artwork is displayed at eye level for children to spark their curiosity. Each playground installation showcases letters inspired by iconic people, places, and things Philadelphia holds dear. These playful representations, such as “Dazzling Drumlines” and “Heaping Hoagies,” reflect the city’s diversity and encourage every child to see themselves celebrated as readers.

The Philly ABCs campaign goes beyond just visual displays. It also includes prompts that encourage parents and caregivers to incorporate fun alphabet games and activities during playtime at the park. Doing so transforms public spaces into immersive learning landscapes, inspiring kids to develop their literacy skills while enjoying outdoor activities.

Kelly Richards, President and Director of the Free Library of Philadelphia, expresses enthusiasm for the campaign as it extends the love of literacy beyond the library walls and into the community. It presents a unique opportunity to champion reading anywhere and anytime, embracing a passion for learning in every corner of the city.

The Philly ABCs campaign kicked off in June 2023 and will continue to captivate young learners until September 2023. Families and caregivers can access Free Philly ABCs posters at library branches citywide, while community partners are distributing Play Kits packed with valuable literacy resources.
