The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society’s 2022 Philadelphia Flower Show Press Conference Goes Live with this year’s theme, “In Full Bloom”.

On a windy, chilled morning at South Philly’s FDR Park – the outdoor, pandemic season home of the 2021 Philadelphia Flower Show – Robin Potter, the chair of the PHS Board of Directors, and Mayor Jim Kenney talked up “In Full Bloom,” the title of the 2022 iteration of the PHS Philadelphia Flower Show.

To be held, again, as an outdoor event in the bucolic and verdant fields of FDR Park – a hidden marvel to most, a surprise to people such as I who grew up with FDR and its Swedish Museum as part of our daily existence – the 2022, 194th edition of the Philadelphia Flower Show will run from Saturday, June 11 through Sunday, June 19. What’s impressive to know going into this June’s flower show is that the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society already made many permanent and lasting physical improvements to FDR Park such as some 7,000 plus plantings and tree maintenance throughout the FDR grounds.

How will the 2022 event differ from, or top, the surprisingly lush dynamics of the 2021 show is anyone’s guess, though I dare say that its flora-architectural designers in the Olmsted Brothers – sons of Frederick Law Olmsted, the designer of New York City’s famed Central Park – will have some fanciful outlook and heightened perspective toward its changing landscapes.

While much of “In Full Bloom” will remain a surprise until the June outdoor showcase, one major element gathered from the press conference is the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society’s dedication to adding more female exhibitors than in previous Flower Show events. This will mean bringing in the work of Royal Horticultural Society’s Chelsea Flower Show award-winning garden designer Ann Marie Powell (where contemporary design with innovative materials meets naturalistic style and sustainability), landscape architect Martha Schwartz (look for 1,800-square foot mushroom display meant to challenge “our understanding of beauty norms, and artfully portrays the allure of fungi”) and landscape design giant Wambui Ippolito.

Because people just can’t look at lushly arranged flowers and algebraically manicured hedges all day, everyone is thrilled that a 300-seat pop-up restaurant from James Beard Award-winning Rittenhouse Square Chef LaCroix will be the centerpiece of the PHS Flower Show’s culinary landscape.

“This year, we have interpreted what it means to be ‘In Full Bloom’ both figuratively and literally,” wrote Sam Lemheney, PHS Chief of Shows and Events. “Guests will experience floral and garden exhibits at the peak of seasonal perfection crafted by award-winning designers while also learning how gardening can contribute to their lives. With new activities, family-friendly spaces, and superb dining experiences, this year’s show will have something for everyone to enjoy.”
