Don Jamieson and Metal Comedy

Co-host of VH1 Classic’s “That Metal Show” and comedian, Don Jamieson, takes the stage at Rivet: Canteen & Assembly.

Beloved for co-creating and co-hosting VH1 Classic’s rawk-out talk show series “That Metal Show”, HBO’s “Inside the NFL”, as well as SportsNet’s “Beer Money” quiz show, stand-up comedian Don Jamieson isn’t all metal, beer and sports. You’ll see when you catch him in Pottstown, on March 24 at Rivet: Canteen & Assembly.

Yes. I have spoken to Don Jamieson in the past, and he’s always been keen to acknowledge that the metal audience is very loyal.

“I am lucky. Not only have they found my website, they come to my comedy shows. You get the couple who come to the comedy cubs dressed up for a dinner and a show, then you get five guys in Iron Maiden t-shirts. I love that dynamic. When I did That Metal Show for 8 years and 14 seasons, the thing that my co-hosts and I tried to achieve was to let people know that metalheads are not meatheads, not a bunch of Neanderthals or beer-swilling idiots who listen to music that only screams. Metalheads are intelligent, sensitive, caring people. Every genre has its silly lyrics. So does metal. There’s also history and social issues at hand in metal lyrics. On That Metal Show, we were people without piercings or long hair who liked to headbang. We were there to buck the stereotypes. We couldn’t dance so we had to bang our heads.”

Last week, considering Philly sports and the trope of grumpy, loutish local fans, Don Jamieson remarked that he has never experienced those horrors.

“Funny, but I’ve never experienced that with the people of Philadelphia,” said the comic. “Even the sports fans have gotten softer. A few weeks ago I went to see the NY Rangers versus Flyers and after the game, a woman in the parking lot asked me if I wanted a nice bottle of red wine? And I was wearing a Rangers shirt. Yes, I took it. And drank it.“

Pushing Don Jamieson to discuss political comedy and-or socially conscious rhetoric, I asked if he felt as if the last several years have made it so that a comic has to take sides.

“I don’t think you have to take sides but yes, I feel more compelled than ever to ridicule the political correctness and “woke” nonsense that we see everywhere now. I just don’t want to be the old guy yelling ‘Get off my lawn,’ so I just try to make sure the jokes are funny. The plumber in the crowd who just worked a 50 hour week doesn’t want me to scold him because of who he voted for. Plus, I may need him to snake my bowl one day.”

As for hot button topics in his stand-up set at the present time, Jamieson is quick to joke, “What isn’t a hot button topic these days? Luckily, I have a full staff of 22-year-old trans amputee persons of color who check my material before I take the stage.”

When it comes to the culture of cancel, and having to navigate comedy in a left/right world with yellow lights to slow or stop you, Don Jamieson stands up and says, “I kind of fly below the comedy radar so most people probably think I’ve already been canceled. I’m like the Thin Lizzy of stand-up… Honestly, more people come up after the show and thank me for calling out the current p.c. insanity. The easily-offended just go home and cry about it on Twitter or do a Fuck Don Jamieson interpretive dance on TikTok.”
