Global Philadelphia Association’s 11th Annual World Heritage City Celebration lands just days after Cecily Tynan’s retirement from 6abc, and the timing gives the evening real weight. The September 10 celebration will honor the longtime chief meteorologist with the 2026 Distinguished Journalism Globy Award, closing out a more than 30-year run at the station with one more recognition from the city she spent decades informing.

Cecily Tynan Honored Days After Her 6abc Retirement

Tynan joined 6abc in 1995 and became one of the region’s most trusted on-air voices, pairing severe weather coverage with a long record of supporting charitable causes across the Delaware Valley. “Receiving this recognition from Global Philadelphia Association is a tremendous honor, and I’m proud to celebrate Philadelphia’s place as a World Heritage City during such a historic year for our nation,” Tynan said.

The evening includes a fireside chat between Tynan and fellow 6abc anchor Nydia Han, a friend and colleague of more than two decades, alongside a seated dinner and cultural performances.

What the World Heritage City Celebration Represents in 2026

Philadelphia became the first U.S. city designated a World Heritage City more than a decade ago, joining an international network built around historical and cultural significance. This year’s celebration leans directly into that history alongside the nation’s 250th anniversary, following Philadelphia’s 67 National Historic Landmarks as another marker of the city’s outsized claim on that legacy.

GPA President Zabeth Teelucksingh framed this year’s event as a dual moment: “As our nation marks its 250th anniversary, this year’s celebration is an opportunity to reflect on our city’s remarkable history while looking ahead to its future as a center of culture, diplomacy and international collaboration.”

Who’s Leading This Year’s World Heritage City Celebration

Former Philadelphia Mayor Michael A. Nutter and attorney and civic leader Leslie Anne Miller serve as this year’s Event Co-Chairs. Miller was the first woman to serve as both President of the Pennsylvania Bar Association and General Counsel of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, with a long record of arts and historic preservation leadership across institutions including the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Kimmel Center.

Vanessa Caracoza, Deputy Executive Director of the Philadelphia City Commissioners Office, and Rishaun Hall, Senior Policy Associate at The Pew Charitable Trusts, serve as Young Professional Co-Chairs — a role GPA is also using this year to recognize Rev. Dr. Lorina Marshall-Blake, who established the initiative in the first place.
