Giovanni Mele has spent 30 years building a Philadelphia institution out of a life that started more than 4,000 miles away. As owner and hairstylist behind Giovanni & Pileggi, celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, Mele has turned a salon into the kind of place clients return to for decades, not appointments.
That kind of longevity in a service business is rare enough on its own, let alone one built by someone who arrived in the city without knowing it at all.
Giovanni Mele’s Philadelphia Story Began in Italy
Mele was born in Satriano, in Italy’s Catanzaro province, and arrived in Philadelphia in June 1975. More than 50 years later, the city is still home. “I’ve had many opportunities to move away over the years, but I have always chosen Philadelphia,” Mele said. “There is something about this city that feels like home to me.” Half a century is long enough that staying stops being a decision and starts being simply who someone is.
That connection runs deeper than the salon itself. Mele attended the Philadelphia High School for Creative and Performing Arts, and the artistic grounding from those years still shapes how he approaches the work. “My love of art has always been a big part of who I am,” he said.

For dinner, Mele points to Spasso at Front and Chestnut, alongside Alice on 15th and Locust. For shopping, he skips the predictable names entirely in favor of Center City’s independent boutiques. “The charm is discovering places that have personality rather than shopping somewhere that feels like every other city,” he said.
Asked for Philadelphia’s best-kept secret, Mele didn’t point to a single spot but to entire pockets of the city: Society Hill, Bella Vista, and Queen Village. “Places you can walk past a hundred times without realizing what a gem they are,” he said, calling that neighborhood feeling one of the city’s most underrated qualities.

For Mele, it comes down to authenticity. “Philadelphia feels real,” he said. “It has history, architecture, food, art, culture, and people with strong personalities.” Thirty years after opening Giovanni & Pileggi, that same instinct for character over polish still defines both the salon and the city it calls home.
A hairstylist who came from Italy with nothing and built three decades of loyal clients in one city isn’t a small thing. Mele had chances to leave more than once, and every time, he chose to stay, which says as much about Philadelphia as it does about him.
