The Philly Opener 2026 returns to the Independence Visitor Center on Tuesday, May 5, for its third year as the city’s official kickoff to tourism season. Presented by Highmark and hosted by the Philadelphia Visitor Center Corporation, the Philly Opener 2026 lands during National Travel and Tourism Week — the stretch between Memorial Day and Labor Day when millions of visitors descend on Philadelphia — and this year carries the added weight of the Semiquincentennial. Governor Josh Shapiro will receive the Most Valuable Philadelphian Award, and a Tokyo-based cheesesteak restaurant will be making its sandwiches live. Tickets are $150 at phillyopener.org.

Governor Shapiro and the MVP Award at the Philly Opener 2026
The centerpiece of the Philly Opener 2026 is the Most Valuable Philadelphian Award, presented by the Philadelphia 76ers, Philadelphia Flyers, and Bank of America. This year’s honoree is Governor Josh Shapiro, recognized for elevating Pennsylvania’s profile at a moment when the state is preparing to welcome the world for the 250th anniversary. Shapiro framed the stakes in economic terms — tourism supports more than 500,000 jobs and contributes over $84 billion to Pennsylvania’s economy, and his administration is focused on making the most of 2026. The award presentation adds a civic dimension to an evening that is otherwise built around food, music, and celebration.
Nihonbashi Philly and the Culinary Experience at the Philly Opener 2026
The food highlight of the Philly Opener 2026 is Nihonbashi Philly, the world-renowned cheesesteak restaurant based in Tokyo, Japan. Owners Kosuke and Tomomi Chujo will host a live cooking demonstration during the VIP sponsor reception from 5 to 6 p.m., preparing their signature cheesesteaks on-site — a Philadelphia icon interpreted through a Japanese lens and brought back to the city that invented it. The general event runs 6 to 8:30 p.m. with experiential activations and photo moments from PVCC and Visit PA, live entertainment from DJ Hollywood, and remarks from leadership at PVCC, Visit Philadelphia, and government officials.

The Sponsors and Leadership Behind the Philly Opener 2026
PVCC President and CEO Kathryn Ott Lovell positioned the evening as the start of a historic tourism season — with the nation’s 250th birthday approaching, there is no better place than Philadelphia to reflect on the country’s story and celebrate its future. The Philly Opener 2026 is co-chaired by Daniel J. Hilferty of Comcast Spectacor, James F. Dever Jr. of Bank of America, and David Adelman of HBSE and Campus Apartments. Philadelphia’s spring calendar of major events and summits has been building toward the Semiquincentennial, and the Philly Opener gives the tourism industry its own anchor moment before the summer surge begins.
