Meet and connect with WXPN Assistant Station Manager and World Cafe Executive Producer, Bruce Warren.

Name: Bruce Warren

Occupation: I’m the Assistant Station Manager for Programming and Digital at WXPN, and Executive Producer of World Cafe, the daily weekday show we produce that is distributed by NPR. I also teach at Temple’s Klein College of Media and Communication and University of Pennsylvania.

Current city: Merion, PA. It’s more a town than a city.

Born and raised there or imported? I was born and raised in Philly: Northeast High, Temple alum, Penn for my Masters of Science degree. I spent a lot of time in the Roosevelt Mall growing up…

What is your connection to your current city? Almost everything. I spend most of my time in Philly, even tho I live in the ‘burbs. Live music, great food, public art, the Sixers, the Eagles, and Wawa.

What’s your favorite restaurant? Ah, it’s toss up, a three way tie for first: a.kitchen, Wm. Mulherin’s Sons, Middle Child Clubhouse. Chinese food has its own category, and for that, it’s only Sang Kee.

Best place to shop? For food, there’s one best place: Reading Terminal Market.

What is your one favorite “best kept secret” about your city? Something that you and only a few others know about but everyone should? Last year I went on an African-American History walking tour of Philly. It’s called Black Journey Philadelphia. Of the many years of learning about Philly’s history that I have been exposed to, I learned a lot that I never knew about our city’s rich history on this tour.

What makes your city your city? What do you absolutely love about it? What makes Philly “Philly” to me has always been the utter “public-ness” of the city, the different neighborhoods, and the people who live here. The local music scene has been amazing for decades, and the restaurant scene is incredible.
