This week’s Listening Booth includes music from the Ugandan-born, Austin, TX-based singer and songwriter, Jon Muq. Plus four other essential tunes that you should be listening to right now.
Hear My Voice – Jon Muq

Born in Uganda and now living in Austin, Texas, music is part of a larger conversation Jon Muq is engaging in with the world. Drawing from African as well as Western musical trends and traditions, he creates songs as offerings to the world, designed to settle into everyday life and provoke reflection and resilience. Hear My Voice “is about the appreciation of my voice being heard as a migrant moving to and navigating a fast-paced new culture. If you have an opportunity, let your voice be heard.”
Running Out of Time – San Gabriel

In a striking turn of events, the creation of “Running Out of Time” found its roots in an East Austin liquor store, a backdrop contrasting the vibrancy of live music with the stark realities of a pandemic-affected world. This compelling piece emerged during a phase of profound personal transformation for James Bookert, who faced the daunting decision between remaining with the stable band, Whiskey Shivers, or embarking on a deeply personal journey with his solo project, San Gabriel. “Running Out of Time” resonates with the urgency of this newfound perspective. It embodies a desire to invest time in artistic endeavors that bring genuine fulfillment, rather than conforming to the conventional definitions of success.
Lose You – Murder By Death

Murder By Death presents “Lose You” the second single from their upcoming LP “Egg & Dart.” This track explores the theme of personal loss beyond one’s control. The album features goodbye songs, making it arguably the band’s most emotional and beautiful release to date.
Come Visit – Whitehall

Whitehall, out of Brooklyn, NY, has released their new single, “Come Visit” that explores the longing for stability and the feeling that others have things figured out. Instead of promoting isolation, it encourages listeners to connect and “come visit.”
BUMBAA (Remix) – Ohthatsmizz featuring Sturdyyoungin, Cash Cobain, Bay Swag, and Jenn Carter

Originally released in Fall 2024, “BUMBAA” by Philadelphia rapper, Ohthatsmizz, has gained over 17 million streams. The remix samples Jhené Aiko’s “Stranger” and serves as a fast-paced anthem designed for the dancefloor, featuring energetic wordplay from Mizz and Sturdyyoungin. In the remix, NY rappers bring their own styles and lay their personal touches to the track.
