Mannequin Pussy Music Delivered on HBO’s Mare of Easttown

HBO’s Mare of Easttown featured music from Philadelphia local group, Mannequin Pussy. The band’s new single, “Perfect” is released today.

If you live in Philly, you know too well that HBO’s currently running Sunday (the second episode aired April 25) murder series, Mare of Easttown is based in, and was filmed on location throughout Delaware County during 2019 and 2020. Yes, the producers and costume designers hung out at Wawas throughout Delco. And yes, series star Kate Winslet worked her ass off to get and maintain that Delco patois. One where the Philly accented likes of “water’ gets just a little more rough play on those “r” sounds. Another notch on the Delco/Philly/Mare of Easttown belt is that our town’s top tier trio, Mannequin Pussy, has its songs performed by Angourie Rice during the HBO series, such as “Who Are You”, with Rice totally re-recorded the Mannequin Pussy songs, with Japanese Breakfast’s Michelle Zauner instructing the series’ actors on how to be in a musical group. Nice.

Even better news for Missy and her Mannequin Pussy crew comes with today’s release of the first single from their due-in-May new EP, “Perfect”, the title track from said upcoming EP. The fresh track follows the previously released “Control”, and shows off the trio’s tense cloistered vibe. One built on a year plus of Covid isolation.

“Last year, I found myself spending more time on my phone than I ever had in my life. Physically separate from other people, I spent hours of time watching other humans perform on my rectangle. I realized that through years of social media training, many of us have grown this deep desire to manicure our lives to look as perfect, as aspirational as possible,” said the band’s vocalist and guitarist Missy on the inspiration behind the track from a prepared statement. “We want to put ourselves out there, share our lives, our stories, our day-to-day. And these images and videos all shout the same thing: ‘Please look at me, please tell me I’m so perfect.’ It’s simultaneously a declaration of our confidence but edged with the desperation that seeks validation from others.”
