Pod Restaurant is back in University City with a refined Japanese menu and an array of sushi delights, offering a taste of the past and future.

STARR Restaurants is thrilled to announce the triumphant return of Pod Restaurant to University City, delighting fans of Japanese cuisine and sushi enthusiasts alike. The Philly favorite restaurant returns to its original concept after a brief stint as Kpod, much to the joy of its loyal patrons who have missed the flavorful Japanese fare for over two decades.

Restaurateur Stephen Starr explains, “Pod was an integral part of Philadelphia’s dining scene for years, and we listened to our customers who craved the return of our beloved sushi. With Kpod’s chapter closing, we’re excited to relaunch Pod as a refined Japanese restaurant and Izakaya, capturing the essence of its glory days.”

Pod’s menu showcases a delightful fusion of traditional Japanese flavors and modern twists, expertly curated by Corporate Chef Mark Hellyar and day-to-day execution by Executive Chef Kenjiro Omori. Every dish celebrates Japanese cuisine’s beloved ingredients, from a diverse selection of cold and hot dishes like Snow Crab Croquettes, Miso Seabass, and Pork Ramen to heartier options such as Mentaiko Spaghetti and Crab Fried Rice.

One of the highlights is the Robata (Japanese Grill) section, featuring Yuzu Prawns, Smoked Pork Belly, and succulent Beef Short Rib. For the ultimate indulgence, beef enthusiasts can savor the A5 Shabu Yaki Don, a prime cut of Japanese Hokkaido snow beef, thinly sliced and grilled to perfection, accompanied by sukiyaki sauce and an egg.

But that’s not all; Pod’s sushi menu, masterfully crafted by acclaimed Chef Kevin Yanaga, is back with a variety of classic and signature rolls like the Butter Krab Rolls and Surf & Turf Roll, showcasing American wagyu, lobster, and truffle soy. Sushi and Sashimi lovers will be in for a treat with traditional favorites and elevated creations like Fluke Tomato and Smoked Shima-Aji.

The beverage menu at Pod is equally enticing, featuring a revamped “Champ-pop” cocktail and innovative concoctions like the “Bird of Paradise” and a “Hi-ball section” with classic and inventive Japanese cocktails. Sake enthusiasts will be pleased with a strong sake program, including a house-infused Citrus Sake, complemented by a selection of wines, beers, and non-alcoholic options.

Located at 3636 Sansom Street, Philadelphia, PA, Pod is now open for dinner from Monday to Thursday, 5 pm to 10 pm, and on Friday and Saturday, 5 pm to 11 pm. With a seating capacity of up to 200 guests, including three signature semi-private dining “pods” for parties of 6 to 12, Pod promises an unforgettable dining experience for Japanese cuisine lovers in University City.
