Kentucky Derby 2026 at The Twisted Tail takes over Headhouse Square on May 2 with an all-day street festival — live music, Mint Juleps, BBQ, best-dressed contests, jumbotron racing, and a $100 VIP experience.

Kentucky Derby 2026 takes over Headhouse Square on Saturday, May 2, when The Twisted Tail hosts its annual all-day street festival from noon to 7 p.m. This is Philadelphia’s largest Kentucky Derby party — free to attend, open to the public, and packed with live music, Mint Juleps, BBQ tents, lawn games, a jumbotron for race coverage, best-dressed contests, and a $100 VIP experience that turns the second-floor Club Room into a private Derby lounge. If you have spent every first Saturday in May watching the race on a barstool, Kentucky Derby 2026 at The Twisted Tail gives you the street festival version with the energy the occasion actually deserves.

Kentucky Derby 2026 festivities kick off at noon with live music setting the tone across Headhouse Square Plaza. Five local bands perform from noon to 6 p.m. — Judd Nielsen and Mikey Junior, Shakey Lyman, Brad Vickers and Margie Peters, Midnight Dispatch, and Gypsy Joe Alves and the Groove Prophets. Race coverage begins at 6 p.m. on the jumbotron, building to the main event just before 7 p.m., followed by a winner’s circle celebration. After sundown, the party moves indoors with live music continuing in the Juke Joint upstairs. Seating inside the restaurant is first come, first served with no reservations accepted.

A dedicated cocktail tent serves freshly mixed Mint Juleps throughout the afternoon — each Julep includes a raffle entry, which is the kind of incentive structure that keeps the line moving. The outdoor grill tent offers BBQ favorites including hot dogs, burgers, tacos, and corn. Lawn games fill the plaza between sets. Derby attire is highly encouraged, with a best-dressed competition running throughout the day and a “Pick the Winning Horse” contest giving guests a chance to win prizes. Inside, the full Twisted Tail menu is available all day for anyone who wants to sit down with a bourbon and a proper meal between races.

The Kentucky Derby 2026 VIP Experience takes over the Club Room on the second floor of The Twisted Tail for $100 per guest. The package includes a DIY flower crown and pocket square station, a commemorative julep cup, a complimentary Mint Julep with raffle ticket, whiskey tastings running from 1 to 5 p.m., a keepsake beer mug, unlimited draft beer, and private indoor and outdoor viewing areas. At $100 for four hours of whiskey tastings, unlimited draft beer, a commemorative cup, and private viewing, the VIP tier is priced to move — and it will.

Kentucky Derby 2026 at The Twisted Tail

Owner George Reilly called this event one of The Twisted Tail’s favorite traditions because it brings the community together in a fun and lively way, and the format supports that claim. The combination of Headhouse Square’s outdoor plaza, a Southern-inspired restaurant with an extensive bourbon and whiskey program, and a live blues venue upstairs creates a setting that feels purpose-built for a Kentucky Derby 2026 celebration.

If you were part of last year’s Derby scene in Philly, The Twisted Tail’s street festival format remains the most complete public option in the city — free general admission, a VIP upgrade for those who want it, and a full day of music, food, and bourbon anchored by one of the best Southern kitchens in the neighborhood.
